In my latest pattern, Sunup Quilt, one traditional quilt block that is included in the pattern/design is a Square in a Square Block! I love making these, and last time I made them I realized that I use a couple of little “tricks” to make the process quick and easy. Let me show you!
- Start by collection the center square and the 4 triangles needed to make your Square in a Square block. If you’re working through my Sunup Patter, the instructions tell you the sizes to cut and how to cut the triangle pieces.

2. Fold the square in half and use an iron to press a crease in the square. Unfold and repeat to make a perpendicular crease with the first one. Fold each of the triangles in half and use an iron to press a crease in each one, as shown in the photo.

3. Place 1 triangle right sides together with the square. Match the crease of the triangle on the long, straight side to the crease on one side of the triangle. Pin in place. Repeat with another triangle piece on the opposite side of the square.

4. Sew a 1/4″ seam on each side. Press seams toward the triangles.

5. Using a ruler and rotary cutter, trim off the little “dog ears” as shown in photo to create a straight edge.

6. Place 1 triangle right sides together with one edge of the square. Match the crease of the triangle on the long, straight side to the crease on the edge of the square. Pin in place. Repeat with another triangle piece on the opposite side of the square.

7. Sew a 1/4″ seam on each side. Press seams toward the triangles pieces.

8. Trim to size indicated in the pattern. Now you have a perfectly square, Square in a Square block! You may want to use steam or starch to get the creases out of the block, or just sew it into your quilt like this and the creases will come out when the quilt is washed.
