Easy Baby and Throw Quilt Pattern for Beginners

This is the perfect pattern for beginner quilters! The pattern is written to make 2 different sizes – baby and throw. You can use 5″ x 5″ pieces of fabric or charm packs! There are so many different directions you can go with this pattern; checkered, scrappy, ombre, etc!

CHARM PACK is the name give to pre-cut packs of fabric available at quilt shops. There are usually 42 pieces of 5″ x 5″ squares of fabric in one charm pack. I love to buy them to have little “samples” of a fabric line. For this pattern you will need 1 charm pack for the baby size quilt or 2 charm packs for the throw size quilt.

Before you begin:

RST: Right Sides Together

WOF: Width of Fabric, assumed to be 42″

All seams are assumed to be 1/4″ unless other wise noted.

Baby Size
  1. Lay out (42, 80) 5″ x 5″ squares according to the chart below. (You will have 4 leftover squares if using (2) charm packs for the throw size.)

2. Sew squares into rows. Press in the direction indicated by the arrows.

3. Sew rows together. Nest seams for crisp corners. Press seams open.

4. Sew Color 1 and Color 2 border rows together. Press seams open.

5. Baby Size:
5a. Measure the top and bottom of the quilt top. Cut borders to the same length.
5b. Pin and sew borders to the quilt. Press toward border strips.

Throw Size:
5a. Measure the length of the quilt top. Cut Color 2 borders to the same length.
5b. Pin and sew to the left and right sides of the quilt. Press toward border strips.
5c. Measure the top and bottom of the quilt top. Cut the Color 1/2 border strips to the same length.
5d. Pin and sew borders to the quilt. Press toward border strips.

The top is now complete!

Time to FINISH YOUR QUILT:

1. Cut and piece backing fabric together as needed.
2. Baste and quilt as desired.
3. Trim the batting and backing to the same size as the top. Square up the corners. 4. Sew the binding together and bind using preferred binding method.
